Lacy couldn’t believe her ears. He was singing an old lullaby her mother had sung to her as a child about—what else—horses. Really? A lullaby? What the heck? But she was ready to try anything at this point.

The mare had been watching them both from some distance away. She stopped, watching Chaney curiously, ears erect as she listened to his crooning. Taking slow careful steps, Chaney approached her, stopping at intervals, but continuing to sing his little song as the horse watched him intently. Twice, she acted as if she might bolt, but then she refocused her attention, twitched her ears, and remained still. Chaney was within about three feet of her now. Closer than Lacy had managed to get in as many days.

Chaney stopped and waited, his deep voice still softly singing the soothing melody. He took another short step. Lacy held her breath. The horse didn’t move. He took another. She didn’t flinch.

Lacy closed her eyes, afraid the horse would rear and hurt him. When she could stand it no longer, she opened them again, and Chaney was standing next to the mare, singing his song softly in her ear. Slowly and carefully, he slipped the halter over her head and fastened it, never missing a beat.

He raised his hand and touched her face gently. The horse seemed to push into his touch. He then moved his hand to the horse’s neck and stroked it softly, talking quietly near her ear. Lacy stood in disbelief. After about five minutes of running his hand down her neck, he stepped closer, and looked around at her side.

“It’s okay now.” He motioned to Lacy. “Come up real slow. Bring your meds and take care of her.”

Lacy obeyed, in awe of what was happening. Moving slow and carefully, she approached. Chaney made several motions to her, and, within a few minutes, she was standing next to the mare’s injured side. Her stomach turned. The cuts that had been so badly inflamed yesterday had festered and oozed with infection.

She prayed they were in time. “They look awful,” she said softly.

“I know. Clean them.”

“Will she let me?” she asked.

He nodded, still stroking the mare’s neck and speaking softly in her ear. Lacy proceeded to clean the sores with cotton, antibiotic cleanser, and hydrogen peroxide. The horse flinched several times, but remained calm.

When she was done with that procedure, Lacy spoke again in a quiet voice. “I have a bottle of antibiotics Julie gave me for one of the other horses. Do you think I should give it to her?”

He nodded again, his eyes closed now as he hummed his lullaby into the horse’s ear, stroking her neck and pressing his cheek against her jaw. Lacy quickly prepared the injection and gave the shot to the horse. The mare stood quietly.

Lacy gathered her supplies and quietly stepped away. “Okay. I think that’s all I can do for her right now.”

Chaney rubbed the mare’s neck and face and spoke some soft inaudible words, then released her and backed away.
